To obtain a Florida
Electrical (EC), Electrical Specialty (ES), Alarm I
(EF), or Alarm II (EG) electrical contractors’ state license you
must pass two open
book computer given exams; a
Technical/Safety exam with 105 test
questions 5½ hours long and a Business exam
55 test questions 2½ hours long. These two
exams are taken at different times and
scored independently. A
minimum score of 75% is needed to
pass each exam.
Applicants have three opportunities to pass each
exam during a one year period. If the
applicant fails an exam three times they
are required to complete seven hours of
continuing education on the subject and
submit a new application before being able
to test again. There is a 21
day waiting period before retaking a failed

Note: *Pilot Questions are randomly hidden in the exam but
not counted toward the exam score.
Electrical contractor (EC) or Electrician means a person who conducts
business in the electrical trade field and who has the experience
and knowledge install, repair, alter, add to, or design electrical
wiring, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, and conduit,
including the electrical installations and systems within plants and
substations and ALL alarm systems and specialty categories.
Alarm System Contractor 1 (EF) means an alarm system contractor
whose scope of practice includes all types of alarm systems
for all purposes
EF = burglary, fire alarms and all other limited
energy
systems contracting.
Alarm System Contractor II (EG) means an alarm system
contractor whose scope of practice includes all types of alarm systems
other
than fire alarm system work, for all low voltage purposes. EG =
burglar alarm and all other limited energy systems contracting.
An EG contractor can not install, service or maintain any fire alarm
system or equipment, including monitoring of such systems,
*with the
exception of an allowance to install residential
smoke detectors and/or residential heat
detectors.
Florida Statute 489.537 (9)
Limited Energy Specialty Contractor (ES) means a contractor
whose scope of practice is limited to a specific segment of low
voltage system specialist (class code 069).
ES-069 means a limited
energy systems specialty contractor whose business includes the
installation, repair, fabrication, erection, alteration, addition
to, or design of electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances,
thermostats, apparatus, raceways, conduit, and fiber optics
(transmission of light over stranded glass) or any part thereof not
to exceed 98 volts, when those items are for the purpose of
transmitting data, proprietary video (satellite systems which are
not part of a community antenna television, cable television, or
radio distribution system), radio frequency, central vacuum, or
electric locks, data distribution networks, home theater systems,
surround sound systems, public address systems or telephone systems. Limited Energy
specialty contractor (ES-069) is an electrical specialty
contractor whose business includes all the low voltage specialty
execution of contracts excluding the above trade definition
of "alarm system contractor". This means that a
electrical specialty "limited energy contractor" (ES) can perform
all low voltage work with the exception of security, fire and
medical alarm system installations, service, maintenance and
monitoring.
Limited Energy - 069 is a class code of the category
electrical specialty contractor (ES)
This specialty was
formerly known as Low Voltage Systems Specialty. Refer to Rule
61G6-7.001 FAC.
(a)
The scope of certification is limited to electrical
circuits and equipment governed by the applicable
provisions of Articles 725 -Class 2 and 3 circuits
only, 770 - Optical Fiber Cables and Raceways, 800 -
Communications Circuits, 810 - Radio and Television Equipment, and 820
- Community Antenna Television and Radio Distribution Systems of the
2008 National
Electrical Code or 47 CFR Part 68. (b)
The scope of certification shall not include work
performed by public utilities exempt under the terms
of Section
489.503(4), FS, or exempt due to the
regulatory jurisdiction of the Florida Public
Service Commission. Refer to
